Definition and background:

Made larger as in chords, intervals or phrases.See also augmentation, augmented intervals, augmented chords. when a set of rhythmic values are lengthened; all values may be doubled, for instance. (Intervals may also be augmented, but this rarely happens in medieval music.) Antonym: diminished. raised, or enlarged. generally refers to the raising of a pitch chromatically by one half step
