Definition and background:
A directive to perform a certain passage of a composition in a smooth, graceful, connected style, as opposed to staccato. It is often indicated by a slur over the effected notes or as an accent mark with a line over the notes to be performed in this manner. Smooth and connected Smooth, flowing joined; i.e., smoothly, in a connected manner (see also articulation)a direction to play smoothly, so that all the notes run into one another. The opposite of staccato Notes covered by this sign are to be played with no gaps. Sometimes indistinguishable from a slur.
